Hi Guys
I have searched around on this but really cant see any information that answers my question exactly. My site has been up since June and has a PR of 0. I have several hundred inbound links, although google only recognises 8 of them. I have 854 pages indexed by Google, there are over 2000 posts on my forum. I have included keywords, have a consistent title which includes my keywords and which is used as the link in most of the inbound links. I really dont understand why my PR is still 0, does anyone have any ideas at all? the site is www.weirdears.com

Well, Google backlinks sample does not mean a thing. Just because they are showing 8 backlinks for your site does not mean they recognise 8... but yes it seems they do not count in most of your backlinks or else the sample would have been bigger.

I checked on Yahoo and the new MSN. Yahoo shows you have something around 225 links, but it recognises only 24-25 of them.

MSN shows a mid 140 range, but recognises around a mid 50 to nearly 60 of them.

This is not really a sandbox problem. It probably means that majority of your links are

a) either not placed in relevant pages
b) do not carry a relevant anchor text

You might be able to help me out here...

IMO, keep placing your links on relevant pages, add a good anchor text to them, and wait for the next PR/IBL update.

Thanks I will. What I dont understand really is that the PR is still 0 after 6 months. Shouldn't it at least be 1 by now?

I think it is strange. I had a site that got pr2 and I just uploaded it 7 days before the pr update. How are your rankings?

By rankings are you talking about my Search engine placement for key words? I dont appear at all, even for non competitive search terms, adwords is the only representation I get with Search Engines

How many of the 255 are signature links? If most of them are then this is probably why but I am still surprised you are pr 0.

Try to get non-signature links is the best advice I can give you.

Are you a beginner in SEO? If so then you will be able to get good advice in this forum.

Yes this is my first website and I'm new to SEO. I have read everything I can find online and thought I had done everything correctly. There are some signature links in there but I dont think its that many. I'd say a good portion are from directories.

Of course, my site keywords are
indie, music, forum, chat, london, alternative, reviews, gigs, bands

but the ones I really go after are alternative, indie, music and forum, I use the phrase alternative/indie music forum as my link text, as the site description and as the site title.

Use this tool to find out how popular your keywords are http://www.nichebot.com/ Also check how competitive these keywords are. The Yahoo link check is probably best.

I would move the links page to outside of the forum. You should be able to find some similar sites to exchange links with. This will help your SEO position and bring in some targeted traffic.

On your PR you will just have to wait for the next update.

Thanks for the advice I will definately do everything that you mentioned. The waiting is the frustrating bit but I guess theres nothing can be done about that. It's kind of catch 22, like at the moment not enough people use the message board to make it interesting so because its not interesting nobody posts anything and it looks boring to new visitors so nobody joins. I know its a just matter of patience though. Thanks again for the tips

Google Toolbar isn't correct anyways. Is your website listed in the google directory (dmoz) ?

Check your real PR there.

That's interesting. Unfortunately I'm not listed with DMOZ yet, I've submitted it several months ago and requested status reports but been ignored. I check my PR here
http://www.top25web.com/pagerank.php

What I don't understand is that some sites have good PR with little or no links or contents. I was just looking at a site from a potential competitor which hasnt even launched yet, they have 2 links recognised by google and a PR of 4, this makes no sense to me at all.

Google will look at all links not just the ones that show up in their link check. That site may well have many more links than that.

Thanks again for all the advice with this guys. I've been working like crazy on this, have made big improvements to the in site optimization and now have over 1200 links recognized by Google, many using my keyphrases as anchor text. I'm showing up top 10 for my key phrases in Yahoo and MSN Beta, google is still ignoring me and it has been suggested that I've been sandboxed but I'm hoping it's just a matter of waiting till the PR update.
